It can feel somewhat daunting to try to eat healthy all the time – after all, most of us would prefer a bag of potato chips to a bunch of raw broccoli. However if it’s important to you to eat healthy food, the best way to go about it is to find ways of incorporating healthy foods into your favorite meal plans. Think of eating healthy as increasing the types foods you eat rather than decreasing them.
How to Eat Healthy
Make a list of all of your favorite meals. Include items that you regularly eat for breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks.
For each meal, ask yourself what could be added. For example, if you really enjoy macaroni and cheese, what about adding broccoli or peas to it next time? If you love eggs in the morning, why not incorporate a few sautéed mushrooms or bell peppers? If your standard lunch fair is a sandwich and chips, just add a few baby carrots and an apple.
Try one new thing per week. If you make an effort to try one new recipe or food item each week you’ll slowly increase your food “vocabulary”. Soups are an excellent item to try because you can incorporate so many healthy vegetables – and you hardly can tell they’re in there.
Substitute eating healthier versions of your favorite junk food items. If you love chips, find a brand that doesn’t use hydrogenated oils. If you can’t get away from candy, look for brands that don’t contain high fructose corn syrup.
Drink more water. No matter what you choose to eat, water is the essential ingredient to a healthy life. Water is used by all of your cells to perform their various functions. Without enough water major systems suffer. If you do nothing else, begin to incorporate 64 ounces of pure water into your diet each day.
Eating healthy doesn’t have to mean reinventing the entire way you eat. You can simply incorporate a few additional items to each meal, and before you know it – you’ll be getting your recommended servings of fruits and vegetables without even thinking about it.
