Weight Loss Foods Are Not Always Healthy

I am going to get up on my soap box for just a moment before I discuss some of the best foods for weight loss that are out there.

While you may get some benefit by buying into the processed diet snacks that are on the market today that are packed with nutrients, some protein, and fiber, you are really doing yourself a disservice by choosing these as your weight loss foods and diet meals.

There are frozen or packaged meals that claim to aid you in weight loss: Lean Cuisine, Weight Watchers, L.A. Weight Loss meals. They give you all these rich and fattening meals that you never thought you would be able to eat on a diet! To make sure you will lose weight with them they give you extremely small portion sizes and you end up still hungry after the meal. Snacks such as protein or diet bars, low calories cookies, and other selections such as these are often disproportionate when it comes to fat and sugar calories, carbs, and fiber. While you may find a few bars and such that seem to include a balance of everything you need, these should be used sparingly when you are trying to lose weight. It is just marketing! Marketing to think you can have your cake and eat it too!

Seriously, if you want to change life long eating habits and have permanent weight loss then you have to start from the root of the problem. The root is often what we have been eating since we were young. We began by learning from our parents and accepted more of that view than we realize. It is hard to change our eating habits, and maybe even harder to change our view of ourselves and what we may have internalized about eating healthy foods. So now many of us rely on pop culture, dangerous fad diets and commercials telling us that their product is a healthy weight loss food.

So what should you do? How can you start eating more healthy? What are the best weight loss foods?

My answer is that you can’t revamp everything overnight unless you are super human. You will have to look at how you eat now and see what you can change tomorrow. You will have to educate yourself on proper serving sizes and how many servings from each food group you should be getting. Making money, earning a degree, running a marathon, learning to dance, or any other skill is a process. So is losing weight and learning how to eat healthy weight loss foods that fit your lifestyle and personality.

So what foods should you be eating? Select a balance of lean protein, fruits and veggies, dairy and whole grains mixed in with some of the good fats such as olive oil and avocados. Yes. The answer is that simple. Go for whole foods that are unprocessed and eat off of the food pyramid. Stay away from fad diets, processed diet snacks, and don’t go for quick weight loss schemes. Eat to feel good, stay healthy, and lose weight.
