Will a High Protein Diet Work For You?

There are a lot of high protein diet plans on the book shelves and it seems their is a new on introduced each day.  The most popular are the Adkins and the South Beach Diet.  Both of these start you off with a very restricted carbohydrate intake.  After a couple of weeks, you’re allowed to slowly add in more carbohydrates until you find the perfect balance for what your particular body needs. The South Beach Diet is a little more aggressive with the introduction of more carbohydrates with a strong focus on healthy varieties. Adkins uses the same weight loss tips but keeps you on a lower amount of carbs for a longer period of time.

The whole concept of either of these diets being “LOW carbohydrate” are based on our current excessive intake.  It’s really only low in comparison to what we’re used to having, but that doesn’t mean this is what we’re supposed to have.

With the new cases of adult onset diabetes reaching well into the epidemic range, there’s no arguing the fact that we’re creating havoc with our pancreases.  When you consume a large amount of carbohydrate, especially simple processed ones, you force your pancreas to jump into high gear and pump out a huge amount of insulin to help regulate your blood sugar. By the time we reach our late 40’s and early 50’s we’ve pretty much worn out our pancreas and left it with little ability to continue to regulate our blood sugar.

Keeping all of this diabetes stuff in mind, it’s hard to argue with the fact that we’ve got to reduce our carbohydrate intake if we’re going to live a long and healthy life.

Will a high protein diet work for you?  Yes! Just remember, you’re kicking an addiction that’s much like, and maybe even worse than, any other addiction.  You’re body is going to go through serious carbohydrate withdrawals when you begin your diet.  You need to be surrounded by others who are going to support and encourage you.  You also need to take some preliminary steps to make sure you’ve creative a supportive environment at work and in your home.  Start by giving away all of the high carbohydrate foods neighbors or your local food closet.  You don’t need those staring you in the face each time you open the cupboard.  Also, make sure you’ve explained what you’re doing and WHY you’re doing it, to you friends and family.

You can succeed, lose some weight and most importantly life a much healthier lifestyle. You’re going to find your clothes fitting better and the best part, you’re going to feel incredibly good.  No more 2pm crashes after lunch and you’re going to find your mood has improved as well. Give it a shot, knowing the first 2 weeks are going to be the most difficult.  You can do this.
