A Healthy Food Guide to Help you Realize Better Health

To be healthy and fit, it’s important to practice eating healthy foods and making exercise a part of your daily routine. If you want to make this your goal, it’s a good decision as most disorders and diseases can be prevented or eradicated by living more healthily and eating healthy food.

Foods that are Good for You and Tasty Too

You can include a variety of foods on a healthy food list which are beneficial for weight loss and optimum fitness, including:

  • Whole-grain cereals
  • Low-fat dairy products
  • Whole-wheat pasta
  • Fruits
  • Vegetables
  • Whole-grain breads
  • Nuts and seeds
  • Legumes
  • Lean cuts of meat
  • Chicken (skinless)
  • Fish

Make Healthy Substitutions

By making the appropriate food substitutions, you can realize the benefits of eating more healthily too. For example, replace fattening desserts with fresh fruits. Or, substitute soft drinks with a fresh fruit drink, vegetable juice or water. Also, replace salt in cooking with herbs, pepper or spices. Use  lemon or lime juice to flavor vegetables. Replace canned soups, which contain an overabundant amount of sodium, with soups you make yourself. Use lentils, beans and vegetables, such as celery and carrots, in your soups along with whole grain pasta or brown rice.

Replace Meat with Legumes

Replace processed meats, such as lunch meat, ham or hot dogs with lean cuts of meat, or chicken or fish. Processed meat contains chemicals that are unhealthy to consume over an extended period of time. Also, make it a point to eat fish or chicken more than meat to cut down on fat and calories. Legumes, such as peas and beans, are a good substitution for meat and should always be added to any healthy food guide recipes.

Prepare Meatless Dishes

It may be a good idea to try some meatless recipes to reduce your intake of fat as well. Think about preparing spaghetti sauce, vegetable soup or chili without added meat as they can still be just as tasty. Prepare nutritious snacks for your children, such as yoghurt, fruit, or pretzels  in place of candy or chips.

Exercise More

Instead of obsessing on the calories you eat, cut down on the size of your portions and maintain a daily exercise schedule. Just walking a half hour a day can help you burn calories and improve your level of fitness.

Don’t Cave into Temptation

Don’t go back for seconds. However, if you do feel tempted, give yourself 5 minutes to decide. In the meantime, focus on something else and think about your reasons for wanting to adopt a more healthful eating program. In most instances, you won’t cave into temptation. It takes mental focus and dedication to stick with a new meal plan but the results will be more than worth the effort you put forward.

Use the above information as a healthy food guide to make steps toward better nutrition and a more healthful lifestyle.
