In the stress and frazzle of every day modern life, eating healthy foods is often the last thing on our minds. We tend to think that eating good foods means that we must spend an abundance of time preparing, when in reality, we just don’t have that time,
plain and simple. But the truth of the matter is that wherever you eat, there are choices you can make that will make your eating healthy for your body. Knowledge of these top healthy eating facts can go a long way towards helping you reach your health goals.
The Importance of Hydration
The first and most important healthy eating tips is this: DRINK WATER!!! Most Americans do everything they can to avoid a simple glass of water with a meal, choosing instead soda, juice, coffee, tea-you name it, nearly anything tastes better than a glass of plain water. Unfortunately, water is the only substance on earth that can perform the vital tasks that water does inside our bodies. Water hydrates; other drinks dehydrate. Water promotes higher metabolism rates; other liquids only provide extra calories (in addition to your meal) to burn off before bed. It cannot be stressed enough how important it is to anyone looking to improve their health to replace the drinks they consume with good old water.
Another easy tip for those seeking a healthy lifestyle: don’t just eat from one food group. Your body needs nutrients from carbohydrates, protein, and fat. The secret to balancing your diet is to not overdo any one thing. If you are having a bowl of spaghetti (and the pasta is even whole wheat!), do NOT go back for seconds. If you love cheese, do NOT use that as your only snack. Now truly, I am preaching to myself here, as this one area is one of my pitfalls in my relationship with food. So join me in my quest to balance my lifestyle so that my body, and yours, gets just what it needs and no more.
Lastly, spread your food consumption throughout the day. Don’t sit down to just two enormous meals a day. Instead, learn to control your portions and refuel four to six times daily. This method will keep your metabolism burning at a steady rate and will keep you from feeling deprived. The key to accomplishing this grazing without gaining weight is to seriously measure portions so that you are not eating a full meal six times a day. With just a snack-sized portion, such as a handful of nuts or a few carrot sticks, you should do well.
Healthy eating habits are possible to implement into your daily routine even if you are always on the go. A healthy diet plan doesn’t mean eating salads at every meal; rather, it means consciously making choices that will put your body in a better place than it was this morning. Small progress is indeed progress, and all progress must begin here. These tips about eating healthy can help you toward even a small goal.
