People with Type 2 Diabetes should eat healthy foods to help control their blood sugar, weight, triglycerides and cholesterol. Type 2 Diabetics must control the amount of carbohydrates they consume, and the percentage of fat in their diets. They need to be concerned with the total carbohydrates in the meal and not just the simple sugars. They should eat three meals a day of thirty to forty grams of carbohydrates per meal, and have two to three snacks a day of fifteen grams. It is important to not eat too many grams of carbohydrate an any one time, and to spread their carb consumption out over the day. They should also choose foods that are less than thirty percent in fat calories.
Healthy foods for diabetics include lean cuts of meat such as skinless chicken breasts. Also lean pork cuts such as tenderloin provide low fat meals. Soy products and beans provide healthy alternatives to meat, but contain starches which convert readily to glucose. Although fruits and vegetables are healthy foods, they also contain simple sugars which can cause blood glucose spikes. Diabetics need to include the carbs from starches and sugars in their calculations. On average, a baby carrot contains about a gram of sugar, so five baby carrots with a meal adds up to about a third of the sugars that should be included in a snack. An eight ounce glass of skim milk provides a low fat healthy snack, but it contains about twelve grams of carbohydrates.
Diabetes causes damage slowly over a long period of time, and requires diligent dining management. Eating healthy food helps control blood sugar levels, but these food may harbor hidden carbohydrates that diabetics must consider in their management. Additionally, diabetics contend with heart disease problems, and they should consume foods low in fat and cholesterol.
