With winter descending upon us, it is only fitting to write a bit about foods for an upset stomach, in case of flu or other winter ailment. Believe it or not, there are plenty of foods, natural ailments, and other natural cures that you can use to handle a flu or cold right at home.


Any food to help upset stomach issues should have as little fat as possible. For example, if you have a piece of toast, hold off on the butter. If you are having noodles, have no cheese. This is one of the best principles to remember when figuring out a menu for upset stomachs.

Applesauce is excellent for upset stomachs. First, it is a beautiful detoxifier. It is also a semi-liquid, meaning that your stomach will work less to get the nutrients out of the food. It is already semi-cooked, so the fiber that often causes distress to the system is broken down somewhat already. Try it next time your stomach is needing a bit of comfort during a rough night.

Tea may also help as a food for upset stomach. The best kinds to choose from are green tea, chamomile, ginger, or peppermint tea. These all contain powerful antioxidants and vitamins that can really help stomach issues.

If you are particularly hungry and needing something substantial, you will want to eat something not quite so nutritious, such as white rice or white bread. These are much easier on your stomach than the healthier whole wheat bread and brown rice. Otherwise, you can opt for a bland soup such as chicken broth or miso soup. These are all considered excellent food for any upset stomach.

If none of these seem to work for you, you can always try the unconventional recommendations that work on various individuals. These might include things such as skittles under the tongue, or yoghurt, or even fennel tea. Try these if all else fails–everyone’s bodies are different and different remedies work on different individuals. You never know what just might work for you.

If your baby has an upset stomach, you can give him a little bit of gripe water or catnip and fennel tea. Use just a few drops in a dropper so that the baby doesn’t choke. If these things and “bicycling” the baby’s legs do not help the baby’s stomach, ask your health care provider for advice.
