K-Cups were invented about 20 years ago by Keurig. They are designed to be used in their coffee makers to brew a single cup of coffee, tea or even hot chocolate. These self-contained plastic containers are about the size of a shot glass with a paper top. You insert the K-Cup into the top of the brewer. When you close the lid, a small hole is pierced in the top and bottom. The brewer then forces hot water through the top and the finished drink comes out the bottom and into your waiting coffee cup.
Surprisingly, this invention has been a huge win for Keurig as over 2.5 million drinks per day in the US are dispensed from one of their machines. Unfortunately, this convenience is not cheap. A typical coffee K Cup can range in price from $0.40-$1.25 each. If you drink more than one cup per day, that can add up to $50 per month or more.
So what can you do to cut down the cost? There are several places that you can find cheap k-cups:
- Purchase on-line through retailers like Amazon and other online specialty coffee retailers. Look for bulk packages where you can purchase forty or more k-cups at a time. Since they will last a year, there is no concern about having them around. Ordering in larger quantities brings the per unit cost down, plus you will save on shipping costs of ordering less often.
- There is also a way to make your own KCups by purchasing a reusable filter. These can be ordered through Amazon and several other coffee retailers. Using these product does cut down on your costs, but it also decreases the convenience. Now you need to fill the small, reusable cups just like filling up a larger coffee maker.
There are a couple ways that you can buy (or make) cheap K-cups. You can still have your favorite morning beverage, but hopefully it doesn’t cost as much!
