Did you know that blueberries can make you happy?
Whenever someone is in a bad mood, there is a tendency to head to the refrigerator to scavenge for junk food. Depression can lead to either a loss of appetite or overeating, and neither is healthy for the body! Ordinary mood swings will also make a person want to reach for sweets instead of eating healthy foods. No doubt there is something about a bar of chocolate that sends signals of comfort to the brain. That is until the person starts gaining weight and looks at the mirror and begins to feel bad all over again. What a vicious cycle! What then is the solution? Instead of reaching for chocolates and sweets, why not go for something much healthier? Most fruits are naturally sweet and what most people do not know is that fruits are also good allies against bad moods!
Blueberries are a great example of this type of fruit. According to a study conducted by the University of Michigan on the health benefits of blueberries, these round, little fruits that are blessed with a delightful taste are actually good anti-depressants. Their natural sugars keep one in a good mood and they help the mind to stay active and sharp. So instead of thinking about whatever has made the person down, the blueberry can sustain happier thoughts, with lesser calories than chocolates (at only 80 calories per serving!).
People that have constant bouts with urinary tract infection should also eat blueberries because they are well known remedy that can help with urinary tract health. Certain bacteria like the E. Coli and B. Coli accumulate in the lining of the inner walls of the urinary tract causing inflammation and infection making it very painful and difficult to pass. Components found in blueberries have been found to be very effective in combating these bacteria. The fruit also has anti-biotic properties that adds to its inhibiting effect and allows the bacteria to be washed away from the urinary tract. Aside from this benefit, the fiber in blueberries will also help people suffering from constipation or diarrhoea.
When choosing fresh blueberries, look for those that are firm and pick those that have a lively color all over the fruit in a uniform manner. If you are planning to buy packed or canned ones, avoid blueberries that have acquired water because the moisture makes them soft and mushy and not that delicious or nutritious. No matter what remember blueberries have a wide range of health benefits and should be eaten regularly.
